Why the Ayurvedic Clock Might Change Everything
Jun 03, 2025
I’ve been wanting to write about this for so long, but I never quite knew where to begin. Not because I don’t know what I want to say… but because there’s so much I want to say. The Ayurvedic clock is honestly one of the things I find most fascinating about Ayurveda. And at the same time, it’s often the thing that meets the most resistance, especially from the B-type night owls in the room (I see you and I love you too!).
Because here’s the thing: what this clock is saying is pretty radical.
That we’re designed to live in rhythm with nature.
That our bodies have an internal clock of their own.
That the time of day actually affects how we think, feel, perform, and rest.
And the big clash?
We don’t live like that.
We live in constant light.
We stare at screens way past sunset.
We eat when we can, and go to bed when Netflix asks if we’re still watching.
Ayurveda divides the 24-hour day into six segments: three in the day, three at night. Each period is governed by a different dosha and each one affects our body, mind, and digestion in different ways.
-
Vata time: 2–6 AM and 2–6 PM → light, creative, flowing energy
-
Kapha time: 6–10 AM and 6–10 PM → heavier, calmer, grounding energy
-
Pitta time: 10 AM–2 PM and 10 PM–2 AM → focused, sharp, transformative energy
And maybe you’re thinking, “But that’s not how my rhythm works at all?”
I get it.
You don’t need to turn your entire schedule upside down.
But this lens might help you make sense of why some things feel easy at certain times and really sticky at others.
Let me give you an example:
Every night around 8–10 PM, I feel so sleepy. Like, eyelids-falling kind of tired.
But if I stay up past 10?
Something shifts. Boom! New energy.
Suddenly, I’m full of ideas, ready to write, talk, brainstorm.
It’s great for me… not so great for my husband who’s trying to sleep 😂
Once I learned that 10 PM to 2 AM is a Pitta time – when the body wants to use that internal fire for digestion and deep repair – it all started to make sense. Instead of letting the fire burn quietly, I was tossing logs on it and lighting up the whole house again.
So no, I’m not saying you need to overhaul everything.
But maybe…
- What if you went to bed before 10 and let your body do what it’s designed to do?
- What if you scheduled your most focused work for mid-day Pitta time?
- What if you made space for stillness or creativity during the light, flowy Vata hours?
There’s so much wisdom here.
The Ayurvedic clock isn’t about following strict rules. It’s a gentle guide. A rhythm you can tune into to find more clarity, energy, and flow in your day.
And that’s exactly what I’ll be sharing more of in the weeks ahead and how to align with this clock as an entrepreneur, a mama, a human.
To understand yourself better.
And maybe, just maybe, live a little more in sync.
